Electric forklifts—it’s time to make the switch

Diesel and internal combustion forklifts have long been the standard at warehouses and industrial sites, and for good reason. They are convenient to refuel, durable and can operate in any weather. However, they do come with downsides. Diesel and LPG forklifts produce carbon emissions and all combustion engines require constant maintenance. Emission taxes, part replacement, repair fees, fuel and oil costs all add up to make a diesel truck’s total cost of ownership (TCO) much higher than the original price tag.

Now there is an option for that is just as capable and durable as internal combustion forklifts but without the extra fees at every corner. Electric forklifts have advanced to a level where they can pack the same punch as their diesel-burning counterparts, all while saving you money on fuel, emissions, repairs and maintenance.

ASAP’s extensive catalog of electric forklifts means that you can find the perfect electric cart without having to worry about these common drawbacks of thermal carts.

Diesel forklifts are dragging you down

As of this year, the monthly cost of operating a diesel forklift for the standard 8-hour workday has reached 6,345 RMB. That is triple the amount of operating a lithium-ion forklift (1,440 RMB), and more than double the amount of operating a lead-acid one (2,160 RMB).

Soon, you may begin to see additional fees from emissions as well, as China plans to introduce a national Emissions Trading System (ETS). Eight pilot cities and provinces already practice an ETS; some provinces are trading CO2around 5-10 RMB/ton, while others like Beijing trade above 60 RMB/ton. According to the 2019 China Carbon Pricing Survey, most major participants expect an average carbon tax of around 30 RMB/ton once the nationwide ETS is implemented.

China 6 is around the corner

Although the unexpected economic impact of COVID-19 has pushed back implementation of the strict emission standards of China 6, regulations are still on track to start in 2021. New rules will make vehicles with diesel engines more expensive to buy. To reach these new levels of emission standards forklift manufacturers will have to introduce expensive particulate filters into their engines, which will increase the upfront cost of the vehicle, getting rid of one of the major advantages of thermal forklifts.

Reduced TCO

Even currently with a slightly higher price tag to cover the battery, an electric forklift’s energy bill is drastically lower over its lifecycle compared to fossil-fuel burning trucks. Furthermore, internal combustion forklifts are more expensive to maintain, while the evolution of electric forklifts shows lower costs over their life cycle (DC carbon motors versus AC motors).

Electric forklifts are powering up

Unlike electric cars, which represents only 3% of the market share in China, the conversion to electric forklifts has been happening for far longer. For several decades, many large factories have gone fully electric for indoor use. Since the advent of weatherproof AC electric motors, electric forklifts are gradually more popular around industrial parks, shipyards and other outdoor settings.

Electric carts will continue to grow as a share of overall forklifts in use, especially as the technology continues to improve their abilities in comparison to diesel forklifts.

Higher user comfort

Silent operation, less vibration, power on demand and no exhaust make driving an electric forklift more enjoyable for the operator. On-board technological innovations ensure higher productivity and better handling safety, such as reduced cornering speed, regenerative braking, ramp handling, automatic parking brakes and highly customizable operating parameters.
